May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Sponsor: President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, & Nutrition (http://www.fitness.gov)

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great time to spread the word about the benefits of getting active. Getting regular physical activity can benefit everyone – children, adolescents, and adults alike.

Here are just some of the benefits of physical activity:

• Children and adolescents – Physical activity can improve muscular fitness and bone and heart health.

• Adults – Physical activity can lower risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.

• Older adults – Physical activity can lower the risk of falls and improve cognitive functioning (like judgment and learning).

Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for everyone to get more physical activity.

  • Encourage students to design their own individualized nutrition and exercise plans
  • Creating school-community based Fitness & Nutrition Nights
  • Allowing only foods which meet minimum nutritional standards to be provided or sold during the school day

Governor's Physical Fitness Program for School Personnel
The Governor’s Physical Fitness Activity Challenge Program for all school personnel, sponsored by the Virginia Departments of Health and Education, offers a great opportunity to be recognized for physical fitness activities that promote personal health and supports the School Division’s Wellness Plan.

Prince William County Schools has established a goal of having at least a 30% participation rate among the school system staff.  Serve as a great role model for fellow staff members and students by showing them the positive effects that daily exercise offers—both physically and mentally.
